History and Brunello Wine: Pienza & Montalcino with Visit and Lunch at Tenuta Fanti

From Siena, head south into the Val d'Orcia for a full day combining two of its finest medieval towns with a generous wine and lunch experience at Tenuta Fanti, a family estate at the foot of Montalcino. Your first stop is Montalcino, a hilltop fortress town commanding views over three valleys and the home of Brunello di Montalcino. Spend an hour exploring at your own pace — the 14th-century fortress, the historic centre and the enotecas that line the main street.

A short drive brings you to Tenuta Fanti at Castelnuovo dell'Abate, set among Sangiovese vineyards with panoramic views towards Montalcino. After a guided tour of the winery, the experience moves to the table: a 4-course lunch — antipasto, first course, main and dessert — paired with five estate wines, which may include examples such as Poggio Torto, Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino, accompanied by Fanti's own extra-virgin olive oil.

The afternoon continues to Pienza, the UNESCO-listed Renaissance city designed by Pope Pius II. Stroll Piazza Pio II, visit the cathedral and take in the iconic Val d'Orcia panorama from the town walls before returning to Siena.
