From Montalcino, travel north through the Sienese hills and into the Chianti Classico for a full day pairing the medieval towers of San Gimignano with one of Italy's most celebrated winery experiences. The drive through the Val d'Orcia and the Chianti landscape — vineyards, cypress rows, hilltop villages — is itself a highlight of the journey.

Your first stop is San Gimignano, the UNESCO World Heritage town whose 14 surviving medieval towers rise above the Elsa Valley. Spend an hour exploring at your own pace — the Piazza della Cisterna, the frescoed Collegiate church and the artisan shops along the main street. A scenic drive then brings you to Antinori nel Chianti Classico near Bargino. A guided tour covers the architectural spaces, the barrel rooms and the suspended tasting hall overlooking the barrique cellar. The tasting covers four signature wines, which may include examples such as Tignanello, Brunello Pian delle Vigne, Badia a Passignano Chianti Classico Gran Selezione and Cervaro della Sala. Lunch follows at Rinuccio 1180 with Tuscan dishes and three further estate wines.
