Built in the 16th century by the Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici to host the offices of the Florentine magistrates, the Uffizi Gallery is one of the oldest art museums in town. Over the years, the Medici family turned it into an exhibit space for the paintings and sculptures of their private collection, and this was then opened to the public in 1769.
